The so-called “Moral Majority Coalition” is one of the largest conservative lobby groups in the US. It features millions of members throughout the country and is headed by pastor and televangelist Jerry Falwell. (Not an actual majority of US citizens but I digress). The aim of the organization is to push their ideas into mainstream culture and change legislation to better reflect the Christian notion of moral law. The crux of their platform includes:
In response to Mr. Falwell I would like to have an official call-to-arms for the new “Immoral Majority.” This coalition will be diametrically opposed to all of the above objectives. In the past, the Prometheus Institute has discussed the first two points* at length (follow links for our analysis) but has yet to touch on the last two, which I will explore below.
Mr. Falwell’s conception (pun) of family life includes a male, a female, several children, maybe even a dog as well, but definitely at least one Bible. The family attends Sunday church services together and watches Mr. Falwell on Trinity Broadcast Network located here in Orange County. The family also abides by the Christian value system.
The Christian value system has shaped and molded the United States from a loose collection of colonies to the only International super power in the world to date. Its focus on faith, hard work, and dedication has allowed US citizens to enjoy a quality of life unfathomable to most of the globe. It has also brought other less attractive qualities. Sexual repression, suppression of science (creationists vs evolutionists), and intolerance. However, despite all of these less desirable virtues, it has proven so far to be the very best religion in terms of creating a harmonious society. Nevertheless, it is with absolutely no hate that I claim that in order for the US to progress and become even greater than what the country is today, it must abandon the cause of preaching Christian values to its citizens through law.
The diversification of the US has lead to an influx of new ideas about society, life, science and for the purposes of this discussion religion. Competition amongst religions has proven that one can lead a fulfilling life without being a Christian. Christianity, however, is so good that it can stand for itself amongst a myriad of competing religions and still be the most popular. There is absolutely no need to slander or block other religions from getting their fair due. Yet, by using censorship to promote its beliefs, the “Moral Majority” weakens its itself. The “Moral Majority” failed to recognize that morality is something that is not dictated but learned. Morality is earned, just as a body builder lifts weight to gain muscle mass, an individual most make correct decisions in order to increase moral fortitude.
Yes, the traditional family of ma, pa, and two-and-a-half kids does provide the most stability for the country, both socially and fiscally. However forcing this ideal down the throats of Americans through the legislation of Christian morality is not the best way to proliferate this idea to the masses. Instead of banning sex education, let’s expand it, starting with the youth. Unfortunately your sexual organ didn’t come with an owners manual, so let’s provide one to our children. Let's have the government distribute condoms in middle schools at no cost to the student. Show our children the dangers of pre-marital conception through TV, the Internet, and even cellphones. The future of the country deserves better than watching some antiquated government .45mm film on the dangers of pre-marital sex.
I do not doubt the intentions of the “Moral Majority,” I’m positive Mr. Falwell wants nothing more than peace and prosperity for all members of this society. His means to an answer though have proven to be ineffective . Time and time again. By providing American citizens (and especially children) with facts, rather than rhetoric, they will be better able to make an informed decision.
So I present to you, new member of the Immoral Majority, a new platform:
Platform for the Immoral Majority:
1. Pro-choice
2. Allow gay marriage on the basis on constitutionality
3. Embrace a positive family life, whatever the religious belief
4. Promote diversity of religious beliefs and the philosophy of education
Who’s with me?
The above work is the opinion of the author,
and not necessarily that of the Prometheus Institute.
