PI policy proposal: The proven benefits of free trade include lower prices on basic goods for American consumers, enhanced competition and consumer choice in global industries, and job creation and economic growth in poorer countries around the world. In recognition of these benefits, Congress should pursue unilateral free trade legislation to reduce the protectionist subsidies and tariffs that hinder American global economic competitiveness. While multilateral free trade agreements are clearly desirable to help foster peaceful international partnerships, America's future economic health should not be crippled by the atavistic resistance of reactionary anti-globalists in other nations. Globalization is the major challenge of the 21st century, and America must lead. Any competitive disadvantage America faces on the global market, whether in quality, efficiency, or cost, is a weakness that must be eradicated through competition and innovation, and not ignored through protectionism.
Policy proposal: A secure offer of employment from a legitimate American employer should be the prerequisite for legal immigrant entry into the United States, and their entry should be expedited and efficiently regulated. Simultaneously, the security lacunae on America's borders should immediately be addressed; the border should be secured and illegal immigrant felons should be immediately deported. With a secure immigration policy, America's labor market remains competitive and dynamic, highly skilled immigrants enter with ease, welfare drain is reduced, and local communities can better adjust to local socioeconomic factors by imposing local taxes on, or incentives encouraging immigrant employment.
Africa: The cure for the political, medical, and economic emergencies in the African continent requires nothing less than local, popular revolution in African nations. Currently, African nations generally oscillate between the control of military dictatorships, Marxist dictatorships, and/or Islamist dictatorships, none of whom are remotely capable of providing basic human rights fortheir people. Necessary progress in Africa first requires government respect for individual liberty, private property rights, free and open trade, religious and cultural freedom and diversity, and a transparent rule of law. For Africa to truly achieve sustainable economic, health, and social progress, the people of Africa must collectively rise up to form new governments conducive to these values of human rights and economic development. The Prometheus Institute stands committed to aiding this necessary revolutionary process in any way it can. Bracelets or concerts just won't do it. Sorry, Bono.
